Florida has revised its laws to create more flexible pathways for foreign-educated physicians to obtain licensure. There are two primary routes:
Residency-Based Pathway
Graduates from a foreign medical school recognized by the World Health Organization and certified under Florida law must complete at least one year of approved residency. If the medical school language is not English, proficiency must be demonstrated through certification or testing.
Alternate Certification Pathway
Applicants with a U.S. bachelor’s degree, medical school credentials recognized by WHO, and partial completion of foreign medical requirements may qualify by passing exams equivalent to U.S. standards and completing supervised clinical training.
Additional Updates:
Medical Faculty Certificate: Foreign-trained physicians with valid licenses and relevant faculty appointments can obtain a certificate to teach in Florida without an exam if they meet specific qualifications.
Board Discretion: The Florida Board of Medicine can exclude foreign medical schools that fail to seek certification.
Interstate Licensure Compact: Physicians must not have disciplinary actions or investigations in any jurisdiction to qualify for this streamlined licensing option.
These updates aim to enhance healthcare access in Florida while ensuring high professional standards.
